Authentic Art Deco diamond and sapphire ring at James Alfredson, Melbourne

Art Deco lasting from roughly 1920-1939 produced the first truly modern jewellery - some of the most dazzling jewellery ever seen. Iconic designs, modernity, wearability and fine workmanship have ensured the popularity of Art Deco jewellery up to present times. Influences as disparate as the late nineteenth century modernist movement, the machine aesthetic, graphic design, the vivid colours of Fauvism and the Russian Ballet, Egypt, the Orient and the tumultuous events of the early twentieth century were crystallised into the Art Deco style by the Exposition Internationale des Arts Decoratifs and Industriels Moderne staged in Paris in 1925. Geometry- circles, arcs, rectangle, triangles and scrolls in the 30’s - led designs. Art Deco’s central concern was design so often the designer, maker and even national origin of many Art Deco pieces are not known.

This authentic Art Deco ring is such a piece, although from the design and workmanship it may well have been made by Marcus and Co or Drecier. It is a proud example of the Art Deco jeweller’s skill set with two fine old Asscher cut diamonds and a square cut rich vivid blue sapphire, each in not one but three surrounds of fine millegrain. The linear choice of the deep cut old Asschers and the square cut sapphire is quintessentially Art Deco. The choice of the colourful sapphire combined with the white diamonds all set finely in millegrained platinum is typical of Art Deco in the 1920’s. The ring still displays influences of the Belle Epoque period in the delicacy and fine workmanship of the diamond set mount, but the elegant flamboyance and design are pure Art Deco.
