Earrings are one of the most popular jewels as their proximity to the face makes them the most obvious and complimentary jewel. They are also the jewel most influenced by personal fashions, in particular hairstyles. Changes in hairstyles to cover the ears in the 1840s meant the virtual disappearance of earrings till the 1850s when hair began to be brushed away from the ears and small earrings reappeared. The fashions of the twenties were enhanced by long earrings emphasising the new short hair fashions popularised by the flappers. The compact Retro earrings of the forties enhanced the hairstyles and severe fashions….Fortunately this has resulted in there being a wonderful variety of antique and estate earrings to complement all fashions and occasions still available today.
