Antique Engagement Rings

Antique engagement rings are the perfect rings for all true romantics with beautiful historic detail and design rich in symbolism enhanced by the soft reflections and individual charms of old cut gems set in richly carved gold or later antique diamond set mounts.

Antique engagement rings – rings more than one hundred old-have for a long time been synonymous with Georgian and Victorian nineteenth century rings and are much sought and loved for their individual beauty, romance and history. Many couples plan for their engagement ring to become a family heirloom as part of their family history and commitment and relish the thought that their ring already has a rich history. These nineteenth century engagement rings are of richly carved yellow gold - currently enjoying a resurgence of popularity. The symbolism of the incorruptibility of gold and of the diamond symbolising true love made diamond engagement rings in the nineteenth century one of the most popular choices but coloured gems each with their own symbolism were also chosen. Sapphires, rubies and emeralds were set in lustrous yellow gold to complement their rich colour. Diamonds were often set in silver to enhance their whiteness before a torch hot enough to work platinum was invented. In the early twentieth century platinum combined with yellow gold then became popular.

With the passage of time rings from the Belle Epoque , Early Twentieth Century, Arts and Crafts, Art Nouveau, Belle Epoque and Edwardian  periods are also now antique although they are usually described by their period to conjure up a specific era and design features. These more recent antique rings also make splendid, romantic and truly individual engagement rings.
