French finely made18ct gold (XRF tested) and rose cut garnet poissardes earrings. The majority of these garnet poissardes earrings from this era were set with Perpignan garnets, an area in France renowned for the brightness of its garnets. The garnet was the most desirable of gemstones for Georgian daytime jewellery and the Perpignan garnets were particularly prized.

The poissardes earrings are believed to have gained their name from the fishwives who sold fish (poisson)at the market and favoured this design where the S shaped metal diagonal in the front fastening mount echoes the shape of a fish hook.

Poissardes are a most versatile and wearable earring with a certain French nonchalance. It is no wonder they have become so sought after.
