ANTIQUE BROOCH/PENDANT ANCHOR AND CROSS IN PALE CARNELIAN AND SILVER

Make an appointment or enquire

Antique brooch or pendant of an anchor and cross intertwined in pale carnelian and engraved silver with “Rope” twisting around them. In earlier centuries when many sailors lost their lives at sea the anchor was a symbol of hope, the cross of faith, so such a brooch would have had moving significance for many.

Such pieces were popular when Queen Victoria favoured all things Scottish, particularly Balmoral and traditional Scottish “pebble jewellery” featuring agates , jaspers, amethysts, citrines and smoky quartz and featuring traditional Scottish motifs and subjects in the nineteenth and into the early twentieth century. This jewellery belongs to that tradition.
